Anders Tegnell, former chief state epidemiologist, became the face of the Public Health Agency and the Swedish line during the covid pandemic.

Together with national expertise, he formulated a clear strategy for Sweden which in many parts differed from guidelines in other countries, often referred to as “the Swedish Experiment”. While the rest of Europe responded to the pandemic with lockdowns, school closures, face masks and widespread testing, Anders Tegnell pushed a strategy of few restrictions and instead voluntary recommendations in Sweden. The opinions were many and the criticism not infrequently harsh, but Anders Tegnell and the agency held their nerve, stuck to the plan and became a unifying force.
